Bicycles are an essential means of transportation for Malawians of all ages. They are used by secondary school students to attend school, by health care workers to provide essential services to villages, and for the movement of essential goods. In a subsistence economy such as Malawi’s, access to bicycles is limited to about one-third of households.
YPI has undertaken two pilot bicycle initiatives. YPI provides bicycles for secondary school and vocational education students attending Malawi Children’s Village . Many of these students have to walk several miles to attend class. Access to bicycles helps ensure that they can attend school and do so less fatigued. YPI has also delivered bicycles to health care workers associated with Malawi Children’s Village and the North Blantyre Relief Project (http://www.bnrp.org).
